The Post Snow Season Snow Fun Continues and a big thank you to all.

By | PWS, Road Update, snow, Summer, Winter | No Comments

For all of you who haven’t got your snow fix for 2019, the fun still awaits you. Whilst Alpine Enterprises have ceased lift operations and Ben Lomond Snow Sports have closed their hire, lesson, transport and food operations have concluded for 2019, the National Park is open to the public and amenities including the shelter at the top of the main car park and the toilets immediately adjacent to the main village street boom gate are still available to people visiting the mountain.

Snow still blankets the entire mountain with huge drifts expected to stick around for months whilst the summer approaches and snow melts across the alpine plateau. The National park has a great feel in the spring and walking trails come into their own with the main snow area able to be accessed by users on foot. Visitors are reminded to check the weather forecast before visiting and prepare for, at times, rapidly changing conditions both on the road and also when having fun in the alpine environment. A list of what is recommended to take can be found here at the snowsafe website.

Visual updates can be found on the Northern Tasmania Alpine Club Web Cams which are located at http://www.ntac.org.au. The latest image from this morning is featured in this post.

What to remember if you are visiting between now and 1 October is that carrying and fitting chains where directed is a requirement of all road users. As no shuttle service is operating to the plateau and main village. Outside these times caution is advised as conditions can rapidly change and road users should remain aware of their own and their vehicles limitations. Chains can be aquired for the drive to the snow from the following outlets:

Auto Barn: 6 Innes St, Launceston
HIRE $50 per day with a $50 deposit
PURCHASE $149-249 per set 25% off until stock is gone in their winter run out sale

ARB 4X4 and Accessories: 48 Holbrook Street Invermay
PURCHASE $270-600 per set

Finally, a massive shout out to Alpine Enterprises and Ben Lomond Snow Sports and all their team for putting on another great winter of snow fun in the coldest and most challenging working environment in Tasmania. Without you, the amount of snow fun attained wouldn’t be possible!

More information on current conditions will be posted here and updates on the mountain will be posted as available.

Ben Lomond Public Shelter works commencing soon

By | PWS | No Comments

Concept plans for the Public Shelter improvements at Ben Lomond (removal of shared breezeway and new entrance off the western deck) have been released for information. The works are being undertaken to improve the accessibility of the Public Shelter as the existing entrances are not clear,  reduce ongoing maintenance costs and provide physical separation from the Public Shelter and Ben Lomond Alpine Hotel.

Works have now been approved & funded and detailed plans are currently being drawn up by the PWS engineer. Works are expected to commence within a month and stakeholders / visitors are advised that during construction the Public Shelter will remain open.

Ben Lomond Users please note that Road works are continuing on Ben Lomond Road and that whilst the road will remain open there may be some short delays. As such please be patient with contractors undertaking the works and allow some additional time for travel through this section of road improvement on the way to our great alpine destination.
